Whether you need to perform maintenance on an elevated space, paint higher parts of your building, reach extensive heights during construction, or simply hang Christmas lights, a scissor lift can help you achieve these heights to complete your tasks. It’s important, however, to know how to safely operate this equipment before purchasing it. Here are a few safety guidelines for scissor lifts to ensure safe operation.
- Always inspect the equipment: It’s important to always inspect scissor lifts before beginning any operations to ensure they will work properly and safely without issues. At Eagle Rentals, carry Skyjack scissor lifts, and we always thoroughly inspect our equipment before selling or renting it out to our customers. You should still perform your own inspection to check that the guardrails are securely in place and that the machinery is functioning properly.
- Place on level surfaces: You will want to place scissor lifts only on level and stable surfaces to prevent any tipping hazards or instability.
- Never move the lift while elevated: It’s best practice to never move the scissor lift while it’s elevated to prevent any falls or instability issues.
- Use during good weather conditions: It’s also best to use scissor lifts in good weather conditions. Most lifts are rated for use in wind speeds under 28 miles per hour and can be at risk of tipping over while elevated from stronger wind gusts.
- Keep your work within easy reach: When using scissor lifts, you should keep your work, whether that be windows for window cleaning or lights and the roof for light hanging, within easy reach, so you don’t need to lean away from the platform or guardrails and risk falling.
